Originating around 3,000 years ago in pre-Columbian Mesoamerican rituals, it is observed today in Mexico and worldwide among Mexican communities. The Aztecs and Nahua peoples saw the universe as cyclical and considered death an essential part of life. Originally held in the ninth month of the Aztec calendar, around early August, it lasted a month.
